 Goan Tisreo Sukhem|Ameijoas com Coco|Goan Clam masala with coconut|Tisrio


Today's recipe is Goan Tisreo Sukhem,simply delicious and very easy to prepare.Tisre‘ or ‘Tisreo‘ means clams in Konkani whereas ‘Sukhem/Sukke‘ means dry (i.e. without gravy)

Ingredients
Masala for the recipe
5 dried red chillies
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
6 peppercorns
2 tsp coriander seeds
6 cloves garlic
1/2 inch ginger
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 cup fresh grated coconut
4 tsp of water
Other ingredients
Clams or Tissreo 250 gms/1/4 Kilo
1 medium onion chopped fine
1 tbsp of tamarind juice(you can also use kokum /amsol juice
oil 1 tbsp
salt to taste
Method
Grind all the ingredients of the masala ,except the coconut ,also add the water ,to a fine paste.Now add the coconut and only blitz the mixer and grind to a very coarse paste.
Boil the tissreo just till they open up.Drain the water & clean the clams by running under clean water.
In a pan,heat oil,once the oil is hot add the onion,saute well,add the ground masala,fry well,till you get the aroma of the spices & coconut,Add the clams/tisre.Mix everything well.
Add the tamarind juice,add 1/4 cup of water to cook the clams.Cover & cook for 3-4 mins on a low flame.Add salt to taste.mix gently,
Enjoy this very delicious Goan treat. with some rice,sorak & tendli pickle.

Important notes

How to choose good tissreo?

The tisreo must be tightly shut shells if the shells are open  that means they have gone bad.However if a shell is open and you tap on it gentlyand if closes immediately that shows that the clam is fresh and  safe to consume.Also it should not have a foul/bad odor.Tisreo should have a salty ocean like fresh odour.
How to clean tisryo?
 Open the tisreo using a knife,but one has to be very careful.Just use the pointed end of the knife in the slit between the( shell two sides)
In this recipe I have boiled them for just a little while till they open up,Do not over boil as all the tasty juices will be lost.
The best way is to Freeze the clams for 45 mins,they will open up on their own.The tisreo has to be cleaned really well as there  may be some sand and grit.
